News from Kim Stewart

Ø      IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE!! New Athletic Booster Club to be formed, volunteers needed!! First meeting February 27th, 7:00 in the library. The funding for all ASB activities is in jeopardy due to the Wash. State Bill #5093, which requires only healthy food be sold at the public schools and sporting events.  This means no more hot dogs, candy, pop, etc. be sold (effective next year). Other means of raising ASB funds are desperately needed. All help would be greatly appreciated!

Ø      Kim Stewart and students met with Rosemary McAuliffe, to explain what effect #5093 is having on ASB activities. Senator McAuliffe is sponsoring another Bill, #6735, that would require a 1% fee from professional effects to go toward supporting athletics and the arts in our public schools. Parents, please support this bill by writing or calling your senators.

News from Dr. Brossoit, Superintendent

Ø      Replacement Technology/Capital Levy vote Tuesday, May 20, 2008. Vote Yes! The Tech Levy that was passed May 2004, expires this year. Upgrading schools, replacing older equipment, adding mobile labs, etc. The tech work continues. Current levy costs taxpayers 58 cents/$1000 of assessed value. With the approval of this years' Tech Levy, the cost would be decreased to 28 cents/$1000 assessed value. Simple majority will pass this levy.

Ø      The new Lynnwood High School will house 1600 kids, and open next Fall ‘09

Ø      Lease agreement with the old Lynnwood High School is moving forward. There will be a 99 year lease with the developer and the money raised will go into the Edmonds School District Capital Fund.

Ø      The General Fund (which funds teachers salaries/running building costs remains stretched very thin.

Ø      The percent of Students Passing the WASL was shared, Edmonds School District vs the District Average for grades 3-10.

Ø      WASL noteworthy information: 30% of the 7th grade students that took the WASL were not in the district in 4th grade. 26.5% of the 10th grade students that took the WASL were not in the district in 7th grade. The turnover of students makes keeping students up with the curriculum difficult.
