Guest Speaker Tonight:  Susie Roberts, MTHS School to Work Coordinator

Susie Roberts is new to this position, she runs the Career Center, but she is not new to MTHS. Susie was formerly a Marketing Teacher at our school. We are very lucky to have her in this new position to help our kids’ transition beyond high school.

Susie’s role is to help students learn about applying to colleges; learn about the numerous scholarships available and to learn about technical schools and other areas beyond high school.

Susie encourages students/parents to view her website weekly, as she updates the information regularly (daily/weekly). On her website you will learn when college visits are happening, when your student can sign-up for SAT, ACT testing, and most importantly scholarship information (which can change daily).

The two main links on the MTHS website to get to this information are on the left-hand column are:  Scholarship Information and Career Center.

Susie also encourages any/all parents of Juniors/Seniors to stop in the MTHS Career Center to get information and ask questions. (The Career Center is located in the MTHS Library) Hours: 7:00AM-3:00PM M-F, Lunch: Noon-1:00PM except on Fridays

Scholarships: There are four basic type of scholarships: National, Local (DAR, Rotary, etc.), MTHS scholarships and College scholarships.

Another place to look for scholarships is: www.fastweb.com, this website helps to narrow down your search of scholarships that you would be eligible for.

College visits are happening now and later in the year there will be technical schools and labor unions coming in to talk with students.

The National College Fair is coming soon, look for further details.

JobMart’ is gone (this is where students could look for work). It has been replaced with Edmonds Career Connections….which requires students to first fill out a form and then get a password to get onto the website. The forms can be picked up in the Career Center.

PSAT. This year, 200 students took the PSAT in mid-October. There was a wait list and a few students were able to fill spots at the last minute. If your student will be a Junior next year and wants to take the PSAT in the fall, it is highly recommended that they sign-up the first week of school, as the limited spaces fill up fast.  Cost $13.
