MTHS Parent Group Meeting Notes

Parent Group Meeting with Greg Schwab, Principal and guest speaker

Nick Brossoit, Edmonds School District Superintendent

AP Courses for next school year, 2007-2008

If your student is interested in taking an AP course next year, they need to turn in an AP and/or CHS Letter of Intent by February 13th to the Counseling Office. After turning in their request, your student will attend a specific meeting for each course they plan to take and then will sign a “Letter of Commitment” for each course. This will allow the school to better schedule next year’s AP courses and allow students to learn of their important commitment in taking AP courses. Additional information is available by contacting your Small School counselor or Diane Lashinsky.

Capital Improvements:

The new Lynnwood High School is scheduled to open in Fall 2009. The location will be on the North Road property near Floral Hills Funeral Home. They are currently getting bids, and the ground is already being cleared.

Plans are moving forward to replace Meadowdale Middle School.

The plan is moving forward to lease out the properties on the current Lynnwood High School site and the Bus Barn site. The Lynnwood City Council needs to re-zone the area in order for plans to move forward. The expected revenue from leasing these properties has grown from 140 million estimate to 200-400 million estimate, partly because in leasing the properties we are also getting a percentage of the revenues generated from retail sales. This money will be very helpful in getting capital projects done, but it does not eliminate the need for levies and school bonds. The money for other expenses comes from different sources. Cost of Living Expenses

Mr. Brossoit mentioned the activity in the legislature in passing a cost of living increase for teachers. They are talking about a 3.4% increase. If approved this will actually cost our school district about 2 million dollars. The reason being that the formula that the legislature uses to calculate number of teachers, based on number of students, does not include all the additional staff required to make our schools run. Our school district has to make up the difference of what dollar amount the legislature approves for staff and the actual number of staff getting the cost of living increase. Go figure.

With the direction of Mr. Brossoit, the Edmonds School District has set up Math Learning Targets for all grade levels, K-12. To learn more about how the district is tackling the issue of our kids meeting the testing requirements in math, including the WASL check out the great information at http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu “Math Learning Targets”
